It was all lights on deck as the 108th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade launched in the harbor Wednesday night.
Mickey Mouse led the way as grand marshal of the parade, while the Disneyland Resort supplied a float honoring the planned January return of the Main Street Electrical Parade to its home park.
About 80 boats, yachts and other floating vessels journeyed the 14-mile route around nearly the entire harbor, affording views to the thousands of spectators in attendance.
“It’s about bragging rights for the boat owners,” said Jeff Parker, chief operating officer of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce. “The skippers in Newport Beach are a tight-knit bunch. They love to one-up each other.
“I have heard that some of the boat owners will spend upwards of $50,000 to decorate their boats,” he said. “But they also bring a lot of underprivileged kids…
